Breaking News - Excessive Big Leaf Maple Logging at Sportsplex

A recent preliminary inspection revealed over 20 Big Leaf Maples were felled in the week of November 16-20, 2009 "for safety reasons" over at the Sportsplex Disc Golf area paralleling South Alder. Although many of the maples had dead leaders, their main upper canopies were very much alive. Butt end inspections reveal very little sign of rot. The age of most trees is around 50-55 years. Some trees which were felled, particularly a few hemlocks showed signs of decay, but were functional wildlife trees for woodpeckers. Many of the maples will probably coppice with new growth in the spring. The few alders that were felled will not, nor will the hemlock. The main loss is shaded forest canopy and understory habitat. Clean up has not yet occurred.
